Inspired from the novel Pachinko by Min Ji Lee. Pachinko is the story of five generations of a Korean family living in both Korea and then later Japan from 1910 to 1989. The reason why Pachinko has resonated so deeply with me is that the seemingly simple themes of family, faith, fate, and identity are also profoundly universal. It showed how the love of family is always paramount despite conflicts, betrayals, and even war.

In my work, Crossing, I delve into the profound impact and collective trauma people experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic through a combination of images. Three female figures portray the various changes brought about these challenging times, such as the immense loss of lives—resulting in widespread grief and mourning, social distancing, and the impact on human social interactions, daily routines, and overall well-being.

“The moments we remember from the first years of our lives are often our most treasured because we have carried them longest. The chances are, they are also completely made up.”
My recollection of my 1st birthday party is fuzzy and indistinct, but nonetheless, it feels authentic and I treasure it as one of my earliest memories. There’s just one problem, I’m not certain it’s real. According to my parents, I probably made up the details from a photograph taken during the celebration. Sometimes I think it came in a dream. It may turn out to be a false memory, but for me it’s wonderful and I’d like to hang onto it, even if it isn’t real.
